Climate Justice Program
Climate change disportionately impacts women in Uganda. At NEVCO we recognize the critical need for climate justice- a framework that acknowledges and addresses these inequalities. At NEVCO we advocate for climate justice, focusing on the disproportionate impact of climate change on women and working to ensure that women's needs and priorities are addressed in climate policies and programs. Our climate justice program works to empower women to lead in climate action, advocate for their rights and build resilient communities. Women are often at the forefront of responding to climate change impacts, yet their voices are frequently marginalized in decision making processes. By centering womens experiences and leadership we can build more effective and equitable climate solutions. Our program recognizes that womens unique knowledge, perspectives and contributions are crucial for building resilient and sustainable communities. Climate justice is A Key to Women’s Empowerment.
Under this program, we focus on several key areas;
- Advocacy & Policy: We advocate for policies and legislation that prioritize the needs of women and girls in climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. This includes pushing for gender-responsive climate policies at local, national, and international levels for example advocating for specific legislation, and participating in policy forums.
- Capacity Building: We provide training and resources to women and girls to build their leadership skills, enhance their understanding of climate change, and equip them with the tools to participate effectively in climate action initiatives.
- Community-Based Initiatives: We support community-led projects that promote climate resilience and sustainability, prioritizing the participation and leadership of women. For example NEVCO supported a project of developing women leaders in Rukungiri local government. Activities included were political leadership training workshops specifically designed for women, campaign management support for women candidates, mentorship programs connecting aspiring female leaders with experience female politicians and public awareness campaigns promoting womens political participation. This gave a greater representation of women in local governance leading to more inclusive and responsive policies
- Networking & Collaboration: We foster a strong network of women climate leaders and organizations, facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing. For example, we partnered with Kyawagonya Local farmers association and community activists to discuss topic of developing and implementing community based carbon offsetting project in rural farming regions.
- Raising Awareness: We raise awareness about the gendered impacts of climate change and promote solutions through educational campaigns, events, and public outreach.
